A Pittsburgh Success

An adventurous Beaver County librarian had a grand debut in the City of Pittsburgh. With a theater packed full of listeners, James, Mike, and Michael performed the brand new four-part installment of Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time: The Men of Tomorrow. It was an absolute success, and the gang can't wait to return to Steel City Improv Theater for future shows! The show was not only Short Listed by the Pittsburgh City Paper, but also featured in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Hot List.

In case you missed this epic performance, you will soon be able to download the episodes via podcast. We are in the middle of moving/re-launching our podcast feed, so there may be a bit of a delay. The latest piece of press comes from Pittsburgh's City Paper, which listed the show in their Short List section: "...if cultural references are any clue, tonight's premiere of "The Men of Tomorrow" should be fun: Dodge and his sidekick race to prevent an Italian Futurist and Elektro (the famed Westinghouse robot) from destroying the Pittsburgh library system."

Time Traveling Librarians Invade Pittsburgh in New Radio Play

A time traveling librarian and his wide-eyed intern are racing against the clock to stop an Italian Futurist and Elektro, the Westinghouse robot, from destroying the Pittsburgh library system. That’s the pulpy tale that will be unfolding in Northside’s newest theatre space, Steel City Improv Theater, on Friday, May 6 at 8:00pm. A trio of Pittsburgh and Cleveland-based actors will take the stage to perform the latest installment of the locally-produced original serial Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time.

Harking back to the old-time adventures of the The Shadow or Green Hornet, Dodge Intrepid is a Western PA-centric radio play complete with sound effects, cliffhangers, vintage commercials, and plenty of colorful voices. Written by James Catullo and Michael Rubino, the show has been regaling Beaver County audiences with the adventures of Dodge Intrepid, the show’s librarian hero, and Pluck Gumption, his sidekick, since 2005.

This is the first installment of Intrepid that Rubino and Catullo have written with a Pittsburgh backdrop, to be performed specifically in front of a Steel City audience. “The Men of Tomorrow” features all new, original material that runs the gamut of time, space, and radio play dramatic devices. In a four-part tale that spans hundreds of years and includes more than a few references to Pittsburgh history, including the infamous smoking robot Elektro, Intrepid will delight an audience of all ages in this one-night only performance. The show has adventure, excitement, comedy, and the creative team’s unique spin on a lost art form that has been increasingly ‘found’ when considering such sold-out performances of Bricoloage’s Midnight Radio—indicating a growing interest in radio plays.

Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time began as a coffee shop side project for Rubino and Catullo, both members of the Cellar Dwellers improv comedy troupe based in Rochester, PA. Following the first edition of Intrepid, third cast member, Pittsburgh actor and arts teacher Michael Hinzman, was added, and together, the three have performed over 50 episodes of the serial. The debut of Intrepid at the recently opened Steel City Improv Theater will introduce their witty brand of library heroics to a new audience, and begin a new chapter for both the time traveling librarian and the creative team behind his adventures.

A name has been chosen and writing has begun for the next adventure of Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time!

The Men of Tomorrow is a brand new, four-part tale that's not only going to feature the return of one of Dodge's greatest enemies, but also open up the show to an entirely new audience. For the first time ever, a new Dodge show is being performed live outside of Beaver County! James, Mike, and Michael will be taking the stage at the newly established Steel City Improv Theater in the City of Pittsburgh's Northside. The show will feature the same setup as before, but on a larger stage!

More details will be posted soon, but in the meantime mark your calendars for Friday, May 6th at 8pm! Admission is just $5, and is open to all ages. Don't miss Dodge's big city debut!

Adventure Comes to Pittsburgh

We've begun preliminary writing for the latest four-part adventure of "Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time." This time, however, the show will be performed in a new venue: the Steel City Improv Theater in Pittsburgh!

Friday, May 6th at 8:00pm, James, Mike and Michael will take the stage at Steel City Improv and present their old timey radio exploits to a brand new audience. This is the first time a brand new show has been performed outside of Beaver County, and we couldn't be more excited about it!

The 2010 Christmas Special

The Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time 2010 Christmas Special was, perhaps, our most successful holiday performance yet! With a cafe packed full of fans, friends, and family, we presented a hilarious new adventure featuring Beaver County's favorite librarian.

In this year's episode, the City of Aliquippa finds itself shrouded in fear as a rash of kidnappings have left the town helpless. With the entire police force on vacation (thanks to a decree from Dodge's grandfather, Mayor Edsel Intrepid), it's up to Dodge and Pluck to find out who's behind the disappearances. What they discover will shake you to your very jolly core!

Performing alongside Mike, James and Michael was the infinitely talented duo of Marissa DeSantis and Jason Panella. Marissa sang some original songs (featured in the recording!), including last year's Christmas hit about the Krampus.

This year's podcast is a recording of the live Beaver Falls Coffee and Tea performance on Friday, December 10th. Unfortunately, our thank you message at the end of the show was lopped off by Garageband, so Mike had to record it separately. We hope you enjoy this very special episode!

Christmas Chaos in Aliquippa: the 2010 XMas Special

We here at Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time have never been ones to hang stockings with care. We hang them with nails. Sometimes with knives. Occasionally with just splinters of wood and glass left over from an epic brawl or catastrophic holiday disaster. Either way, we hang our stockings on the mantle of the Aliquippa National Library, above a roaring fireplace fueled by intrigue and high-adventure. This year's Christmas Special is burning with white hot mystery!

A wave of kidnappings is leaving the city of Aliquippa decimated. With the entire police force on Christmas vacation, the next in line to solve the case is our heroic librarian, Dodge Intrepid, and his intern, Pluck Gumption. Can they save the city and Christmas?

You'll have to find out on Friday, December 10th.

The Dodge Intrepid radio show is (finally) returning to that lovely cafe atop College Hill: Beaver Falls Coffee & Tea Company. It'll be an evening of laughs and thrills, as well as some beautiful music from Cleveland's own Marissa DeSantis, accompanied by Jason Panella.

You can see all of this (for free) on Friday, December 10th at 7:30pm. And if you can't make it, don't worry: we'll be podcasting the live recording of the show the following week! Of course, the podcast will be missing the warmth, atmosphere, and espresso... you'll just have to imagine that.

Our final installment of Dodge Intrepid: Flesh and Bloodlines is finally here! Episode 512 is a 26-minute epic that closes out our brand new adventure with thrilling action, touching drama, and more than a few twists!

In our last episode, Dodge and Pluck, along with Dodge's parents Pacer and Mercedes and Robot H.G. Wells (it's a long story), were hurtling upwards, towards the sky, in their newly acquired, futuristic automobile. Now, in this fourth installment, our group of heroes will traverse the entire country, surveying the strange world of 2525 A.D., and searching for their stolen Chronotope and the mysterious Linguarota.

Dust off those library cards, get out your listening robe, and put some coffee on the stove... it's finally time for a new Dodge Intrepid podcast!

The first thrilling episode of our brand new adventure, Flesh and Bloodlines, is now available!

Episode 509, the first of four episodes in our new adventure, finds our heroic librarian, Dodge Intrepid, and his faithful intern, Pluck Gumption, preparing a new audio/visual room in the library. As they clean out this seemingly unused auxiliary office, they discover a box of letters: the last correspondence from Dodge's missing parents. Until now, our hero has never heard a word from his parents, who have been missing most of his life. Now, not only does he find their letters, but reads of a brand new artifact sure to help with the decoding of his mystical collection of books! Our duo sets off for Alaska.

For the time being, this brand new adventure will only be released as a pristine live performance recording, complete with introductions by the cast, lovable flubs, and the laughter of a cafe full of fans. These are some of our best sounding live recordings to date. The show was recorded live on August 21st at Cafe Kolache in Beaver, PA. Performers include Mike Rubino, James Catullo, Michael Hinzman, and Marissa DeSantis, as well as sound effects by Dan Rubino.

A Bloody Success!

Dodge Intrepid's big return, Flesh and Bloodlines, was a smashing success this past weekend! With a packed coffee shop, and a packed performance space, the four new episodes were met with a great reception. Of course, why shouldn't they have been? With Mike, James, and Michael being joined by Marissa DeSantis and Dan Rubino (on sound), it was our biggest performance yet!

Now that this show is in the books, stay tuned for our upcoming podcast releases. For the time being, we plan on releasing just the pristine live recordings (with superior sound compared to our previous live releases). Considering that the cast is spread out over a 100 mile radius, our ways of basement studio recordings may be put on hold. In the mean time, enjoy what is to come!

Moving Foward in Time

Just a brief update about the upcoming, full-length installment of Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time. Mike and James are hard at work, writing together through the miracles of modern technology. It's a new process for them, but it's also working quite well. The ebb and flow of time travel adventuring has started up again.

The show is about half-way written, and so far it's shaping up to not only be another gloriously thrilling installment, it's also going to be a fairly important one. New secrets will be revealed, lingering questions answered, and potted meat devoured. New characters. New locations. And a lot of other things we can't mention just yet.

The grand back-from-hiatus show is scheduled for Saturday, August 21st at Cafe Kolache in Beaver, PA. Trust us when we say that this is a one-night-only performance not to be missed.

In the meantime, we've been getting some great feedback from folks returning to our previous adventures. We recommend you go back and give them a listen... because they're awesome.

That Old Hiatus

It's been a while, dear Library Aids. It's been too long. The last you've heard from Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time, it was Christmas. A lot has happened since then, causing us to take a slight hiatus. The series co-creator/writer and voice of Dodge Intrepid, James, moved to Cleveland. But now that he's settled in up there with his wonderful fiance, Mike and James have begun work on a brand new adventure.

Using the miracles of modern technology, Mike and James have begun the writing process with the help of an advanced telegraph system called iChat AV. They may be miles apart, but that won't stop Beaver County's favorite time traveling librarian from saving the world.

Christmas Special 2009!

It's that magical time of year when folks can spend time together, exchange stories, eat dessert, and bask in the glow of yule-tide warmth. It's also the time of year when our heroic librarian can go on a new adventure through Christmastime!

This year's Dodge Intrepid Christmas Special is special for a number of reasons. This year we're only releasing a special, jumbo sized, live recording (44MB) which features 40 minutes of humor, mirth, adventure, and music! It was performed at Beaver Falls Coffee & Tea on Thursday, December 17th.

Joining us for the recording was Cleveland musician Marissa DeSantis who, along with musician Jason Panella, rocked the house with a combo of original songs, covers, and carols. Included in the middle of the podcast are two of Marissa's original Christmas songs!

In this year's adventure, Dodge Intrepid is faced with a dangerous dilemma: Pluck's parents are due to arrive at the library for a holiday dinner, but his faithful intern has gone missing! With a questionable agency Santa Claus snooping around the library, and Tug moonlighting as his enemy, can our hero save the holiday from certain disaster? And make sure you stick around for a commercial for a brand new film from Uncle Wilbur Family Productions!

This first installment kicks off the latest adventure of Beaver County's favorite time traveling librarian. The Riot Act is filled with danger, surprises, and excitement. The cast is huge, with scores of colorful characters both new and old! It's a tale not to be missed.

The Riot Act TOMORROW

We're just a day away from our brand new adventure, The Riot Act. It's been almost five months since our last live performance, Death Mountain Crusaders, and we're very pleased with what we've come up with since.

The Riot Act picks up immediately after our previous adventure (but that doesn't mean you needed to hear said adventure, of course): Dodge and Pluck had just returned from a daring adventure to Africa, where they managed to secure a new mystical book called The Kryodex. Unfortunately, while in Africa, Ambridge librarian Chris Sebring and his intern Bucky were killed by natives and hippos (respectively). Now, Dodge is feeling the heat from Archibald McLeash, the Librarian of Congress who vows to punish Intrepid for Sebring's death. Making matters worse, Grandpa Edsel Intrepid and the Kryodex were kidnapped by Allister Farious.

So Dodge has a lot on his plate. With Grandfather missing, the City of Aliquippa suddenly becomes mayorless and plunges into anarchy. Grandpa could be anywhere in time. There's a power void. Archibald arrests Intrepid with the hopes of squeezing a confession out of him for the death of Sebring. Pluck is trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces. It's a mess.

Our latest adventure is brimming with excitement, thrills, and laughs. It's an urban adventure into a land of chaos and anarchy. It's gonna be good.

Local writer Jason Panella offers up a great critique of the show, while also calling on today's youth to explore the lost art of pulpy radio adventure:

While there’s a wide-eyed sense of wonder about the radio show, it’s written with tongue rooted in cheek. Mike and James (with addition voice guru Michael Hinzman) saturate their radio shows with deadpan and offbeat humor. And it works quite well. Their writing has grown significantly since they began; while the first few shows had a few laughs, the crew’s most recent shows have caused me to cry from laughing so hard. The interaction between the supporting cast is my favorite thing — Mike and James have created a world so intricate that minor characters like monomaniacal newspaper editor Ted Brubaker or Dodge’s pathetically inept grandfather Edsel Intrepid feel like real people.

This final episode features a very special ending: a brand new commercial written just for Cafe Kolache! While this is customary for our live shows, this performance is even more special because the cast is joined by stalwart Kolache co-owner, Hugh Harper! This very special recording of our April 30th Live Sound show not only features a brand new I.L.L. adventure, but also six amazing acoustic songs by Cleveland musician Marissa DeSantis!

It had been over nine months since we had performed a live radio show at Cafe Kolache, and were thrilled to see such an outstanding attendance. The cafe was packed, and by the end of the evening it was standing-room only. We were very pleased to see so many returning listeners who have been following the show for a number of years, as well as the new folks who were hearing the show for the first time!

We must, of course, thank Hughes and Kristi from Cafe Kolache for their support--and Hughes for coming up and playing himself in our special commercial for the cafe at the end of the show. We'd also like to thank the Beaver County Times for their continued support of Dodge Intrepid.

In case you weren't able to make it to the performance, don't fret! We are just days away from Live Sound at Beaver Falls Coffee & Tea!

Now, if you've never heard of Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time, or perhaps have never caught a live performance at this wonderfully quaint coffee house, here are three things to keep in mind:

1.) Live Sound features a special Inter-Library Loan episode of Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time. It's a self-contained, super funny adventure following our heroic librarian as he risks his life to fulfill I.L.L. requests.

2.) Live Sound features great local musicians. This time around, the show features Cleveland's own Marissa DeSantis, who is appearing for the first time (as a musician) at BFC&T. She'll be playing two sets of music in between segments of the radio play.

3.) Live Sound features great coffee. Okay, we didn't make the coffee; Beaver Falls Coffee & Tea Co. did. They roast it on-site, using beans that they buy directly from farmers all over the world. They have top-notch baristas who make the best latte's around. They also have smoothies that are quite good on hot days. So you can sit back and enjoy some great beverages while you listen to a fantastic radio adventure.

There are plenty of other great reasons to check out Thursday's Live Sound performance... but these are three you can certainly remember. The show runs from 7:00pm-8:30ish, and admission is free!

Then, on Saturday, May 9th, we will be making our triumphant return to Cafe Kolache for Dodge's brand new adventure: Death Mountain Crusaders! Don't miss the special live recording of our first-ever Christmas Special performance! Recorded at the awesome Beaver Falls Coffee and Tea in Beaver Falls, this special podcast features our brand new holiday episode and some special music by Jason Panella!

Like previous "Live Sound" shows at BFCaT, Jason joined us to sing in between breaks in the radio adventure. This time, not only did he sing some original material, he lead the packed house in some heart-warming Christmas carols! It's Light-Up Night in the bustling burgh of Aliquippa, and Grandpa Edsel Intrepid is preparing for the big triumph of his first term as mayor: he's going to create the most magical Christmas celebration ever, complete with a parade, living nativity, and children's choir. Meanwhile, our hero, Dodge Intrepid, and his befriended nemesis, Buick LeSabre, are on their way out of town to a Vancouver Rare Book Expo and Symposium. Both of these seemingly unrelated events are brought together, however, when a saboteur shows up to destroy Christmas!

Oh yeah, and Pluck and Tug are vying for first chair alto in the children's choir.

The Dodge Intrepid Christmas Special features all of your favorite Dodge Intrepid characters in a heart-warming and hysterical new adventure! It's Aliquippa's Light-Up Night, and Dodge and Buick LeSabre are looking to get out of town to avoid Christmas festivities... but before they can hop a train, a secret saboteur strikes! With Thanksgiving right around the corner, James and I are hard at work on the brand new Dodge Intrepid Christmas Special. This is going to be the fourth Christmas episode we've written, and it's shaping up to be pretty fantastic.

Even better, however, is the fact that we're performing it live this year! Dodge Intrepid will be returning to Beaver Falls Coffee & Tea alongside musician Jason Panella for a special Christmas show on Thursday, December 11th. The show starts at 7:00pm and is free to all ages.

The Dodge Intrepid Christmas Special will be similar to our Live Sound performances, featuring one special episode broken up into three segments. In between segments, Jason Panella will rock out. This time around, he'll be singing some Christmas carols, and hopefully you'll sing along!

Last Saturday's performance of "Dodge Intrepid: The Beginning" was a complete and overwhelming success! Cafe Kolache was packed full of long-time listeners and newcomers, and we sincerely thank all of you for coming out to support us.

We would also like to extend great thanks to Karissa Kilgore, who stepped in for our usual sound technician Dan Rubino, and did an excellent job. The show was a tremendous success thanks to her awesome manipulation of the sound effect programs we create for each episode.

We would also like to thank Kristi and Hughes, the owners of Cafe Kolache. This locally-owned cafe has supported our show from the very beginning, and we certainly wouldn't be performing and podcasting this adventure radio serial without them. Cafe Kolache is a big part of our live show, and we thank them for always welcoming us back.

The Old and the New: Three Years Passed

Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time was born out of a love for coffee. In 2005, when I had a lot more time on my hands, I would visit my local coffee shop, Cafe Kolache, almost every-other-day. Usually I would go with a couple of my friends from the Cellar Dwellers, the Pittsburgh-based comedy troupe. One Sunday afternoon, I was hanging out at the cafe to catch a 5k race that was going on throughout the town (the shop is never open on Sundays, so I didn't want to miss the rare chance for some coffee). While there, I got to talking with Kristi, the cafe's owner, who asked me when I was going to bring the Cellar Dwellers to perform there. The cafe is much too small to have a 5-8 person improv troupe perform in, but her request gave me a better idea.

I decided that same day that I would try and put on some sort of radio show in the cafe. Not wanting to take on things all by myself, I brought the idea to James, whose love of literature and writing made him a perfect companion. Together, we brainstormed about pulpy adventures, listened to old episodes of Captain Midnight, and created an homage to the hay-day of Beaver County and the beloved library system.

The original four episodes set out to introduce the main characters, the idea of time traveling with a book, and stress the differences between Beaver County then and now. Despite having some authentic Captain Midnight scripts to study, and years of comedy writing under our collective belts, we were learning as we went. We asked our good pal Christoph to join the team to provide us with extra voice talent and technical-production skills that we lacked. We recorded the first set of episodes in the Cellar Dwellers' theater, located a floor above a bowling alley. If you listen closely, you can occasionally hear the faint rumblings of the bowling alley in the background of our archaic recording.

The success of that first show, which was performed on Saturday, August 27th 2005, was amazing. Since then, we have performed over a dozen times, releasing more than fifty episodes in both studio and live recordings.

Tomorrow, James and I, along with Michael Hinzman, will be celebrating the three-year anniversary of Dodge Intrepid at Cafe Kolache. We've rewritten the original four episodes, giving them new life and humor (without breaking the continuity of the show). So if you've always wanted to listen to the show, but have been intimidated by our large selection of episodes, this is your chance to get in at The Beginning.

Promoting Futurism Thru Adventure!

Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time is doing its part to promote literature, the library system, and Modern Art movements! Our latest adventure, "Web of the Futurist," is all based upon an Italian art movement started in the early 20th Century. Recently, Italian Futurism News, a blog dedicated to preserving Futurism and promoting exhibits and scholarly work on the subject, discovered the show and honored us with some very kind comments:

I'd never imagined a conversation where it would be declared that "Marinetti thought we could just rub the toast on the butter" but here we are, in the midst of the"Web of the Futurist", 4 episodes which are part of the "Dodge Intrepid" series of radio programs by Mike Rubino and James Catullo. As Mike Rubino says in an article on PittsburghLive.com, "We've taken an obscure modern art movement and embodied it in this villain called The Futurist. It's a hilarious way to learn about the movement and everything it stood for."

We have been delayed, however.

We know that the edges of your chair are beginning to wear, what from all that excited anticipation for new episodes, so we've decided to release the live recordings of Wed of the Futurist first (rather than waiting until after the studio recordings). So, over the next four weeks, get ready to experience Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time like those who come to see it at Cafe Kolache: fresh, live, and unpredictable! The sound quality of our latest episodes is quite excellent, so hopefully these tales will be even more exciting than usual.

A New Special Adventure: I.L.L. 2!

Dodge and Pluck's latest adventure into the world of Inter-Library Loans is now podcasting! This new one-shot episode, I.L.L.2, first debuted at the Live Sound performance on April 26th. Now, it's been recorded in our studio and polished to perfection.

In this latest adventure, Dodge and Pluck receive a request for Charles Dickens's Mudfog Papers, the only Dickens book not in Dodge's possession! That doesn't deter our hero! Dodge and Pluck use their time traveling book to go back when the Mudfog Papers were first published; however, their adventure to Victorian England triggers a case of a mistaken identity and uncovers a treacherous con man! It's a thrilling episode you won't want to miss!

The newest live recording of "Fireside Assassins" is now podcasting! Live Episode 414 features Mike, James and Michael performing in front of a full house at Cafe Kolache last February.

And, if you're looking for a new opportunity to see a live show... don't forget that there are two coming up in the next bunch of weeks! First, James and Mike will be joining up with local musician Jason Panella for another installment of "Live Sound" at Beaver Falls Coffee & Tea Company, located right across the street from Geneva College, on Saturday April 26 at 7:30pm. The show will feature a new episode of the "I.L.L." adventures and some great music by Jason.

Then, just two weeks later, the gang will be back at Cafe Kolache for a thrilling new adventure! Mark your calendars for May 10th at 7:00pm, because you won't want to miss this hilarious and exciting new tale.

Live Podcasts Begin... Live Sound in the Future!

This week we begin podcasting the live recordings from the "Fireside Assassins" performance of February 16th, 2008. The show debuted to a full house at Cafe Kolache in Beaver, PA. You may find, if you listen close, that there are some slight differences between the scripts of the live and studio episodes (mainly because the live shows lend themselves to a spot of ad-libbing). So download the live recording of Episode 413 today!

Also, get ready for two new live performances coming up in the next month. After a fairly long hiatus, Dodge Intrepid will be returning to the Beaver Falls Coffee and Tea Co. (known to most as "BFCaT") for another "Live Sound" performance. The Live Sound shows feature a brand new Dodge Intrepid adventure alongside local musician Jason Panella. Our latest Live Sound performance is being held Saturday, April 26th at 7:30pm. Admission is totally free!

Dodge's latest adventure is coming to a fiery end with today's release of Episode 416, the final installment of Fireside Assassins!

In this thrilling conclusion, our heroes converge in France, at the fiery mansion of Buick LeSabre. While Dodge and Pluck are busy helping Buick, those relentless defenders of the Fourth Estate, Ted Brubaker and Tug Horsense, were tailing two spies through the woods of Dijon. These spies seem to be connected to the fireside assassination attempt in Washington, and Ted and Tug are determined to find out how!

Who are these faux-Nazi spies? What possible motives could be behind the fireside assassination attempt? Will our heroes be able to get out France alive, or are there explosive challenges ahead? Find out the answers to these questions and more in the final chapter of Fireside Assassins.
